If Galeem defeats Dharkon, Mario watches in trepidation as Galeem unleashes a wave of light and is ostensibly vaporized with the rest of reality. If Dharkon defeats Galeem, Mario is seen lifelessly slumping over as the world is engulfed in darkness.

In the intro for the game Mario Tennis for the Nintendo 64, Mario is one of the participants of the tournament. Here, he defeats Donkey Kong to gain access to the semi-finals. In the semifinals, he defeats Yoshi and moves on to the finals against Luigi. While the two brothers are looking for the missing tennis ball prior to the match, Wario and his partner Waluigi appear and cause mischief. After this, Bowser and a Boo appear. Everyone stands back in fear thinking that the two came to cause trouble as well.

However, while searching for a proper place, Mario and his friends notice a cave and decide to explore within it. After entering the cave, the four friends are transported to Subcon. Mario remembers his dream, and he and his three friends decide to save Subcon from Wart and the oito bits. Throughout their adventure, Mario and his friends defeat many of Wart's members, including Birdo and Mouser. Eventually, Mario and his three friends confront Wart himself in a battle. After defeating Wart, Mario and his friends save the Subcon fairies and Subcon.

Rears back his fist and then throws an overhand. When hit clean, it is a meteor smash with enough knockback to KO under 45% offstage. It has the slowest startup of his standard moveset (frame 16), high ending lag, and is Mario's only aerial that doesn't autocancel in a short hop.

Jumpman was later renamed "Mario" in the 1982 arcade game Donkey Kong Junior, the only game in which he has been portrayed as an antagonist.

Donkey Kong, however, pops the balloon, so the two then disguise themselves as chefs, but this also fails. During the prison football game, Mario again tries and fails to capture Donkey Kong while disguising himself as a referee. When Donkey Kong and the criminals are finally cornered at the top of the building, Mario, in a police outfit, and Pauline tell Donkey Kong that the criminals are tricking him. Donkey Kong then tosses the clique agora criminals in the cage and escapes in a hot air football, leading Mario and Pauline to continue chasing him. "Greenhouse Gorilla"

This caused a mediocre reception for Mario. Players also looked at his nerfs, noting that it ultimately impacted Mario in the long run. The nerf to his combo game made it seem to affect Mario, as that was his best toolkit in his arsenal.

Mario made his 3D debut in Super Mario 64 for the Nintendo 64.[25] Princess Peach sends Mario a letter inviting him to join her at her castle for cake;[26] however, when he arrives, Mario discovers that Bowser has invaded the castle and imprisoned the princess and her servants within it using the castle's 120 Power Stars. Many of the castle's paintings are portals to other worlds, in which Bowser's minions guard the stars.

Dark Wizzy in particular has gotten top oito at Shine 2019 and Glitch 7, both of which are supermajors. Due to this, Mario has earned a competitive presence that is just as strong as in SSB4, and many notable players all place him as a solid high tier or even top tier character as in the previous game, though this is largely up for debate as many characters ranked lower than Mario in SSB4 have also received more drastic improvements than him, such as Peach, Pikachu, Lucina, Palutena, R.O.B. and Wario. Regardless, Mario is one of the few SSB4 top tier characters alongside Fox and Zero Suit Samus to keep consistently placing well at tournaments overall. Aesthetics[edit]

Autocancels in a short hop. Can combo into a tilt attack or grab at low percents if landing on the ground shortly after the hit. Very similar to the Jump Kick from Super Mario 64.

Mario has first appeared in any sports game in Golf, although his proportions are more realistic and he wears simply pants and a shirt. In addition, in Japanese versions of Golf, Captain Rainbow would later identify the character as a more generic Ossan (although this was one of Mario's initial names during development of Donkey Kong).
